The Stanmore House School Multidisciplinary Team are the worthy winners of this year’s Improving Life Experiences Award at the Scottish Children’s Health Awards 2026.
For the dedicated team at Stanmore House School, improving the lives of children and young people with disabilities and complex needs is not simply a job. It is a commitment that shapes everything they do. Every day, education professionals, therapists and care staff work together to ensure that each child has the opportunity to thrive, achieve their potential and enjoy a rich, fulfilling school experience.
At the heart of the school’s approach is a belief that every child deserves an education tailored to their individual needs, abilities and aspirations. By bringing together expertise from education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and care, the multidisciplinary team creates personalised learning experiences that support children in every aspect of their development.
Their work is firmly rooted in the principles and values of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), ensuring that every young person is treated with dignity, respect and understanding. The team champions the rights of children and works tirelessly to create opportunities that allow them to flourish, both inside and outside the classroom.
Those who nominated the team for the award spoke passionately about the impact Stanmore House School has on children and their families, describing it as:
It’s a truly wonderful place.
The nomination recognised not only the expertise of the staff but also the warmth, compassion and dedication that is evident throughout the school community. Families know that their children are cared for by professionals who see their potential and celebrate every achievement, no matter how big or small.
Head Teacher Clare McCarron said the team was both surprised and delighted to receive the award, describing the recognition as a reflection of the commitment shown by every member of staff. she said:
I know that I am speaking on behalf of the Stanmore Team when I say, it is a privilege to work with the children of Stanmore House School, they are what motivates us.
The school’s success is built on a collaborative approach where education, care and therapy professionals work seamlessly together to support children in achieving the very best outcomes. While academic learning is a key focus, the school is equally committed to providing experiences that build confidence, independence and self-esteem.
From developing communication skills and mobility to encouraging creativity, social interaction and personal achievement, the team works hard to ensure every child has opportunities to succeed. Their goal is not only to help pupils learn, but to help them discover their strengths, unlock their talents and develop a genuine sense of pride in themselves.
Clare believes this holistic approach is essential.
Because it is their right to have an education and one that develops their personality, talents, and physical and cognitive abilities. We are strong advocates for our children, and they motivate us to do better which ultimately enhances their school experience.
The impact of the team’s work can be seen every day in the progress and confidence of the young people they support. Whether it is a child mastering a new skill, achieving a personal goal or simply sharing a joyful moment with a member of staff, those successes are celebrated throughout the school.
Reflecting on what makes the school so special, Clare said:
For me, as Head Teacher I have a standout moment every day just seeing a member of our team with one of the children completely present with one another, finding joy in the moment.
That sense of connection, care and shared achievement defines life at Stanmore House School and lies at the heart of why the multidisciplinary team has been recognised with this year’s Improving Life Experiences Award.
As they prepare to celebrate their success at the Scottish Children’s Health Awards, Clare is keen to shine a spotlight on the remarkable people she works alongside every day.
I am immensely proud of the Team and this Award is so well deserved… even if I do say it myself.
The judging panel recognised the extraordinary work of the multidisciplinary team and noted that the right to education is at the heart of everything they do. The panel was particularly impressed by the way the team lives and breathes the principles and values of the UNCRC, ensuring that children and young people are supported to learn, grow and achieve their full potential every day.
