Foster carers play a crucial role in providing stability and care for children and young people, particularly those who have experienced trauma. As part of Foster Care Fortnight 2025, on Saturday 10 May 2025 carers in Loch Fyne participated in two face-to-face workshops on Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing and Calming Techniques – equipping them with essential strategies to support children’s emotional needs.
In partnership with Argyll and Bute Council, Children’s Health Scotland delivered these sessions which focused on practical approaches to help foster carers create safe, nurturing environments where children can thrive.
Foster Care Fortnight, led by The Fostering Network, is the UK’s largest campaign to highlight the transformational impact of fostering and the powerful relationships that define every fostering journey. This year’s theme, “The Power of Relationships,” recognises the importance of strong connections between carers, children, and support networks in ensuring a positive future for young people in care.
Michelle Wilson, Head of Children and Young People Services at Children’s Health Scotland, spoke about the value of training in strengthening foster carers’ confidence:
Foster carers often navigate complex emotional challenges and equipping them with the right tools is vital. Understanding mental health, emotional wellbeing, and calming techniques empowers carers to support children through difficult moments. The relationships they build are life-changing, and we are proud to help strengthen their ability to provide compassionate, informed care. I would also like to extend our thanks to our partners, Argyll and Bute Council, for organising such a great venue and ensuring foster carers had the opportunity to participate in these workshops.
The workshops were well received, with foster carers expressing appreciation for the guidance, practical techniques, and peer support shared during the sessions.
Children’s Health Scotland remains committed to advocating for the health and wellbeing of children and young people in foster care, ensuring they receive the support they need to flourish.
