Our Self-Management Skills (SMS) programmes help children feel more comfortable together while beginning to explore Self-Management Skills. During our programme this week it has been wonderful to see confidence starting to grow as the children and young people settle into the group.
Commenting on the session, our Coordinator, Eilidh Findlay, said:
During week two and onwards is really when we see the young people start to come together, the nerves of the first week are settling and everyone is able to relax and join in more freely. It was a fantastic session and we can’t wait to see friendships forming and confidence growing even more!
Settling into the Group
By the second week of our Self-Management Skills (SMS) programme, many of the children and young people were beginning to feel more comfortable in the space. Starting a new group can feel a little daunting, so these early sessions focus on helping everyone relax, get to know each other and build trust. It was lovely to see everyone beginning to chat more naturally and take small steps in getting involved!
Building Confidence Through Connection
We began the session with some light activities designed to help everyone start conversations and share a little about themselves. These moments might seem simple, but they play an important role in helping young people feel safe to speak up and connect with others. Practising these skills can help children and young people feel more confident expressing themselves, which is an important part of managing their health and wellbeing.
Understanding Health and Stress
This week also introduced conversations around health and stress. The group explored what health means in everyday life and how different parts of our wellbeing can influence how we feel. Talking about stress helped participants recognise that everyone experiences it in different ways and that there are strategies that can help when things feel overwhelming. Developing this awareness is a key step in learning how to manage challenges and take care of ourselves.
Learning from Each Other
A big part of SMS is creating a space where young people can learn from one another. Throughout the session there were opportunities for the group to share ideas, listen to different perspectives and work together. These shared moments help build friendships and remind participants that they are not alone in their experiences.
Ending on a Calm Note
Each session finishes with a short relaxation activity. These techniques give children and young people practical tools they can use outside the sessions whenever they need a moment to pause, reset and look after their wellbeing.
By the end of Week 2, it was great to see smiles, laughter and growing confidence in the room. As the programme continues, we look forward to seeing these connections strengthen and supporting each young person as they develop their self-management skills.
