The Children’s Bravery Award honours a child or young person who’s shown extraordinary courage in the face of serious illness or disability. It recognises those who, despite immense challenges, continue to inspire others with their strength, resilience, and spirit.
This year, we’re proud to present the award to Jessica Miller, whose journey has touched hearts and uplifted everyone around her.
Courage in the Face of Challenge
Jessica’s story is one of quiet strength and remarkable bravery. Living with intestinal dysmotility, Jessica is currently nutritionally fed via a tube. It’s a reality that would be daunting for anyone – let alone a teenager navigating the already complex world of growing up.
“I find it really difficult,” Jessica shares, “but I embrace my tube.”
Her courage lies not only in enduring the physical challenges of her condition but in the emotional strength it takes to accept and adapt to a new way of life. Her mum reflects on this journey with real pride.
“Jessica has shown such strength. She truly is brave. Being nutritionally fed via tube has been very traumatic – accepting this new reality while going through her teenage years. She has become so wise.”
Finding Light Through Art
When Jessica reached one of her lowest points, she found the courage to ask for help – a powerful and brave act in itself. With the support of her Health Play Assistant, Wendy, Jessica began to rediscover her voice and her strength through art. When she received that help, she turned her attention to how she could help others, which was noted by the judging panel.
“Speaking up and then using her own experiences to help others, she found a route through art which she now shares with others. Jess is a wonderful example of bravery and, through her art, an enduring gift.”
Jessica’s creativity has not only been a source of healing for herself but a way to raise awareness and bring joy to others. She even designed a charity Christmas card, a moment of celebration and recognition for her talent.
A Moment of Pride and Purpose
Winning the Children’s Bravery Award has been a powerful moment for Jessica.
“I’m very happy, excited and honoured. I was so shocked. To be bringing some awareness to the chronic illness community means so much. These illnesses affect our full lives in many different ways. “
“I want to thank my family and friends for all of the support they have given me. And thank you so much for this award.”
Jessica dreams of becoming a tattoo artist, a path that blends her creativity with her desire to express and connect. With her strength, talent, and heart, there’s no doubt she’ll continue to inspire others wherever her journey takes her.
Congratulations, Jessica. Your bravery, honesty, and creativity light the way for so many others.
