Delivered in partnership with Intandem
Trigger warning: This session includes discussion of lived experience of care and personal experiences of mental health, which may be distressing for some participants.
The WAITING TO BE HEARD Workshop creates a reflective and participatory space for children and young people, alongside parents, carers, and professionals, to explore experiences of mental health, waiting times, and access to support services. Grounded in real‑life experiences, the workshop focuses on listening, understanding, and learning from young people’s perspectives on navigating mental health systems and the emotional impact of delayed support.
ABOUT INTANDEM
Facilitated by Intandem, the session is co‑designed with children and young people and uses composite stories, scenarios, and structured group discussions to explore key themes such as uncertainty, communication, advocacy, and wellbeing. Participants are encouraged to reflect on how systems, processes, and professional responses can shape young people’s mental health experiences—both positively and negatively—and what meaningful, timely, and compassionate support can look like in practice.
For children and young people, the workshop offers a safe and supportive environment to share experiences, build confidence, and feel heard on issues that directly affect their lives. For parents, carers, and professionals, the session provides valuable insight into the lived realities of waiting for mental health support, highlighting the importance of early intervention, clear communication, and rights‑respecting approaches to care.
The workshop reflects Article 12 of the UNCRC—the child’s right to express their views and have them taken seriously—and Article 24, the right to the highest attainable standard of health. By centring young people’s voices and experiences, Waiting to Be Heard promotes participation, understanding, and improved access to mental health support for children and young people.
