Kinship Care Week 2022 is taking place this week, hosted by the Kinship Care Advice Service for Scotland (KCASS). This week aims to increase understanding and recognition of the role of Kinship Carers and the challenges they face. It is also an opportunity to celebrate kinship carers for the essential role they play in raising children and young people.
Kinship Care week is hosted by KCASS, alongside other Kinship Care organisation, including Children’s Health Scotland. Anne Wilson and Sarah Nelson, Head of Development and Assistant for our Care Experienced Children and Young People Service, delivered a webinar on Tuesday 15 March 2022 for Kinship Care Week. “Calming Techniques for Carers, Children and Young People” aims to help Kinship Carers to understand why children and young people in their care may get stressed, how to prevent these ‘meltdowns’, and practical techniques to help calm the child when this does happen.
Sarah Nelson, who will be helping to deliver the webinar, said: “We are very exciting to be taking part in this year’s kinship care week. Our online webinar with KCASS will be a bite sized version of our new workshop ‘Calming Techniques for carers and their children and young people’. Self-care is sometimes viewed as a luxury when it is essential! You can’t pour from an empty cup, so it is important for carers to look after themselves so that they are best able to support the children and young people in their care. This workshop topic has been requested from carers themselves and it will be a more practical rather than theory-based workshop. We will be looking at techniques that carers can use for either themselves or with their children and young people to help them self-regulate and stay calm.”
During the week, there will be six informative webinars, including our contribution to the week. Full details of the events programme can be found here. There’s still time to attend some of the events for Kinship Care Week 2022.
During Kinship Care Week 2022, KCASS will also be launching their new What Now? Booklet, an information booklet which will be available for all kinship carers to give them essential information at the start of their kinship journey. The booklet will be made available to all Local Authorities and any agency working with kinship families. The What Now? Booklet is available to download here and can be sent to anyone who requests a copy.
