Children’s Health Scotland is delighted to announce the return of our Self-Management Skills (SMS) Programmes this August 2025. These in-person programmes are ideal for children and young people aged 9–17 living with a health condition or concern—no formal diagnosis is required.
Why Refer to SMS?
The SMS Programme is a proven early intervention that supports young people who may be:
- On waiting lists for CAMHS or other services
- Living with long-term health conditions
- Experiencing emotional or physical health concerns
- In need of confidence-building, peer support, and self-management strategies
By referring now, you can help reduce anxiety and isolation over the summer and ensure young people feel prepared and supported before the programme begins.
What the Programme Offers
SMS is a child-led, creative, and supportive space where participants:
- Build confidence and resilience
- Learn self-management and coping strategies
- Explore their health rights
- Connect with peers who understand their experiences
- Take part in fun, health-focused activities
Each participant is welcomed with a 1:1 Zoom introduction, helping them feel comfortable and informed before attending in person.
What Young People Say
“I used to feel nervous about my health, but now I feel more in control and confident.”
“It’s the first time I’ve been somewhere where people really listen to me.”
“I didn’t think I’d enjoy it this much—it’s actually fun and I’ve learned loads.”
“I’ve made a lot of new friends and I’m really excited about continuing as a Health Rights Defender.”
“I liked that we could talk about things that matter to us, and no one judged.”
“I feel like I understand myself better now.”
“It helped me speak up more at school and at the doctor’s.”
“I didn’t know other people felt like me—it made me feel less alone.”
These voices reflect the transformative impact SMS can have on a young person’s wellbeing.
Make a Referral Today
We are encouraging referrals throughout the summer to give young people time to:
- Meet the team and ask questions
- Feel reassured and ready for August
- Begin building positive relationships and coping skills
You can refer a young person directly or support them in self-referring.
