This summer, we brought families together in Cranhill for five joyful weeks of connection, creativity, and community through our SMS:FAMILIES Programme—a partnership with Cranhill Development Trust, proudly supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery.
Held on Monday afternoons, the programme welcomed families with children in Primary 1 to 4, with younger and older siblings always included. At its heart was one simple but powerful idea: play is a self-management skill—and it’s even better when shared.
Why Play Matters
For children under 8, play is more than just fun. It’s how they learn to:
- Express and regulate emotions
- Build resilience and confidence
- Solve problems and make decisions
- Connect with others and feel safe
When families play together, these skills are nurtured in a supportive, joyful environment. And when communities come together to make space for play, everyone benefits.
🗣️ “I didn’t realise how much we all needed this. It’s not just the kids—it’s us too. We’ve laughed more in the last few weeks than we have in ages.” — Parent participant
What We Did
Each week, families explored different types of play—from messy crafts and sensory stations to outdoor games and storytelling. The sessions were designed to be inclusive, accessible, and above all, fun.
🗣️ “My wee one used to be scared of trying new things. Now she’s the first to jump in. She’s even teaching her baby brother how to play!” — Parent
🗣️ “I liked the painting and the bubbles. And the snacks!” — Child, age 6
A Community Effort
This programme wouldn’t have been possible without the warmth and dedication of the Cranhill community. The Cranhill Development Trust team helped create a welcoming space where families felt seen, supported, and celebrated.
🗣️ “It’s been amazing to see families come out of their shells. Play has a way of opening people up—it’s healing.” — Cranhill Development Trust staff member
A Word from Our Head of Children’s Services
🗣️ “Play is not just a pastime—it’s a powerful tool for self-management, especially for our youngest children. Through play, children learn to navigate their emotions, build relationships, and develop confidence. The SMS:FAMILIES Programme brought this to life in the most joyful way. The community spirit we felt in Cranhill was incredible—families supporting each other, laughing together, and growing stronger. We’re deeply grateful to the People’s Postcode Lottery for giving us the opportunity to pilot this exciting programme. It’s made a lasting impact.”
— Michelle Wilson, Head of Children’s Services
Looking Ahead
The SMS:FAMILIES Programme reminded us that self-management doesn’t have to be serious—it can be silly, spontaneous, and shared. As we look to the future, we’re committed to creating more spaces where families can thrive through play.
Because it really does take a village—and sometimes, that village just needs a few bubbles, some paint, and a whole lot of laughter.
