Children and young people living with a health condition can often feel isolated, worried about fitting in, or like nobody else really understands what they are going through. SMS:FACE TO FACE creates a space where they can be themselves, make friends, build confidence and discover that they are not alone. We’re delighted to announce that SMS:FACE TO FACE is returning from Saturday 13 February to Saturday 13 March 2027 at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus. This completely free Self-Management Skills programme is open to children and young people aged 9-17 who are living with a health condition or concern. And importantly, no formal diagnosis is needed to take part.
“SMS:FACE TO FACE is more than just a programme. It’s a chance for young people to meet others who understand, try new things, build confidence and create friendships that can last a lifetime.”
Whether a young person is managing a long-term condition, struggling with their mental wellbeing, experiencing anxiety, or facing health challenges that impact daily life, SMS:FACE TO FACE offers a welcoming and supportive environment where they can connect with others who understand.
More Than Just a Programme
At Children’s Health Scotland, we know that good health is about much more than medical appointments and treatments.
SMS:FACE TO FACE is designed to help children and young people:
- Build lasting friendships
- Grow in confidence and self-esteem
- Develop self-management skills
- Connect with others who understand their experiences
- Feel more positive about the future
- Reduce feelings of isolation
- Learn strategies to help manage anxiety and worries
- Have fun in a safe, supportive environment
Many young people tell us that one of the best things about SMS is meeting others who “get it”. Friendships often continue long after the programme has ended, helping young people feel connected to a wider community of support.
What Can Young People Expect?
Expect laughter, friendship, activities, discussion, creativity and plenty of opportunities to try new things.
Our experienced team creates a welcoming space where every young person is encouraged to participate at their own pace, share their experiences if they wish, and celebrate their strengths.
Whether someone joins feeling nervous or unsure, they will be met with understanding, kindness and encouragement every step of the way.
For Parents and Carers
If you’re worried that your child lacks confidence, is feeling isolated because of their health, or would benefit from meeting peers facing similar challenges, SMS:FACE TO FACE could be a great opportunity.
The programme is free to attend and has supported countless children and young people to feel more confident, connected and empowered in managing their health and wellbeing.
