Referrals now open for our next SMS Programme (Ages 9–17) which is being delivered in Edinburgh. Our Self-Management Skills (SMS) Programme is a supportive group experience for children and young people living with health conditions. Delivered over a series of sessions, it helps young people build confidence, develop practical skills to manage their health and wellbeing, and connect with others who understand their experiences.
As Eilidh Findlay, Coordinator at Children’s Health Scotland, explains:
SMS gives young people a safe, welcoming space where they can be themselves, meet others who understand, and build the skills and confidence they need to manage their health in everyday life. We see such a positive difference in how they feel about themselves and what they’re able to do.
We’re delighted to invite referrals for our next programme starting this August.

What is SMS?
SMS stands for Self-Management Skills — but for the children and young people who take part, it’s much more than that. It’s a welcoming, supportive group programme where young people can:
- connect with others who have shared experiences
- build confidence at their own pace
- explore ways to understand and manage their health and emotions
- discover their strengths and what works for them
Across the sessions, we often see young people grow in confidence, form friendships, and feel more comfortable expressing themselves — leaving with a stronger sense of control over their health and wellbeing.
What will young people gain?
Through fun, interactive activities and group discussions, SMS supports young people to:
- better understand their wellbeing and emotions
- recognise and manage stress
- develop communication and coping skills
- learn about their health rights
- build confidence and independence
- connect with peers in a safe, supportive environment
Everything is delivered in a child-led, trauma-informed way, creating a space where young people feel heard, respected and able to be themselves.
Who is it for?
We welcome referrals from families and professionals. A diagnosis is not required. SMS can be particularly beneficial for children and young people who may:
- need a boost in confidence
- benefit from emotional wellbeing support
- feel isolated and would value peer connection
- want to build practical self-management skills
