Foster carers from East Renfrewshire Council recently gathered to explore why adolescence matters—and how their role can shape brighter futures for young people. The session marked a milestone for Children’s Health Scotland, as this is the first of our workshops to receive CPD accreditation, recognising the value of the learning and support offered to those caring for young people.
Niki Smith, Coordinator at Children’s Health Scotland, reflected on the session:
Adolescence is such a pivotal time in a young person’s life. This workshop gives carers the space to better understand what’s happening beneath the surface, while building confidence in the difference they can make every day.
Adolescence is often described as a bridge between childhood and adulthood, but for many young people—particularly those who are care experienced—it can feel far more complex. Rapid changes in the brain, identity, relationships and independence can be both exciting and overwhelming. When early experiences have included instability or trauma, this stage can bring additional challenges, shaping how young people respond to the world around them. Understanding this helps us see behaviour differently—not as something to be managed, but as something to be understood.
At its heart, adolescence is also a window of opportunity. With the right support, relationships and environment, young people can build resilience, develop new patterns of trust, and grow in confidence as they move towards adulthood. Foster carers play a vital role in creating the consistency, safety and connection that makes this possible.
