This winter, our SMS:CONNECT Programme has been buzzing with energy and positivity! Over six weeks, 23 incredible young people aged 9–17 have joined us every Monday and Thursday to explore self-management in fun, creative, and empowering ways.
From the very first session, the atmosphere has been filled with laughter, curiosity, and connection. Each week brings new opportunities for young people to build confidence, discover their strengths, and learn practical skills to manage their health and wellbeing. Whether it’s sharing stories, setting goals, or practicing calming techniques, the growth we’ve seen has been inspiring.
Here’s what some of our young participants had to say:
- “I’ve learned how to calm down when I feel stressed – and it actually works!”
- “I feel more confident talking about my health now.”
- “The best part is meeting new friends who understand what I’m going through.”
Michelle Wilson, Head of Children’s Services at Children’s Health Scotland, shared why this programme matters:
“Hosting SMS:CONNECT online is vital because it reaches children who might otherwise miss out—those living in rural communities and those who feel anxious about joining in-person groups. It gives them a safe space to learn, connect, and grow. We’re excited to continue this support through our monthly SMS:HUBs, which will keep those connections strong.
Health Rights are at the heart of every SMS Programme. When children know their rights, they feel supported, secure, heard, and valued—and that’s exactly what we want for every child.”
What makes SMS:CONNECT special is the sense of community. Young people support each other, celebrate achievements, and leave each session feeling proud of what they’ve accomplished. These moments remind us why self-management matters—it’s about giving children and young people the tools to thrive, even when health challenges arise.
And the excitement doesn’t stop here! We’re thrilled to announce that our next in-person SMS Programme starts in Edinburgh on Saturday 21 February 2026. This six-week programme will bring even more opportunities for fun, learning, and connection. Plus, we have lots of SMS Programmes planned throughout 2026.
